Prof. Dr. Matjaž MIHELJ

graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1996. For his diploma thesis he was awarded by the Slovenian Ministry of Science and Technology with the Bedjanič award. He received M.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees from the same Faculty in 1999 and 2002, respectively. Since 2014 he has been affiliated as a full professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana.

In 2001 he was a visiting researcher at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, developing a functional electrical stimulation system for lower extremities. In 2005 and 2006 he was a visiting researcher at the Automatic Control Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). His research area was rehabilitation robotics, more specifically development of the exoskeleton-based rehabilitation robot ARMin. The result of the research is now a commercial rehabilitation robot Armeo Power (Hocoma, Switzerland). Dr. Mihelj was involved as a researcher or (co)leader in many EU funded projects. Most recent successful projects are MIMICS and Caretoy. His current research interests are in human-robot interaction, haptic interfaces, medical and rehabilitation robotics, as well as modeling and control of biological systems with the main focus on restoration of lost functions in people with disabilities. Dr. Mihelj’s research resulted in more than 120 publications, of which 35 are in peer-reviewed journals, and three patents. The Scopus database indicates more than 480 pure citations of the aforementioned publications and the h-index equals 11. He published 3 scientific monographs (2 with Springer Science+Business Media) and 6 textbooks (2 with Springer Science+Business Media). He serves as a reviewer for about 15 scientific international journals and different international research projects.

As a professor he gives lectures on robotics, virtual reality, mechanical design and man-machine interaction with the main focus on multimodal systems based on haptic devices. He supervised more than 40 diploma, master and doctoral students.

Dr. Mihelj was honored with two awards for transfer of knowledge: Swiss Technology Award 2006 for development of a rehabilitation robot ARMin and University of Ljubljana Rector’s Award 2012 for a sensorized rehabilitation device for upper extremities Bimeo. He is a member of IEEE and IFMBE.
